Etching Press Restoration

Shin Nihon Zokei etching press restored to it's former glory after rescue from a school where it had suffered abuse, misuse and neglect. This is the second Shin Nihon Zokei press I have restored and just today I got a third Shin Nihon Zokei press brought to me to restore, this one not suffered damage from misuse and abuse but exposure to the elements and long neglect.... nothing missing, nothing damaged just all shabby and surface rust and dust. Seems like I am a Japanese press hospital.... I like fixing up stuff that is well made and useful. Makes me feel useful

Etching Press Restoration

This press was at a School and fairly wrecked over time by the students and came home to the Press Hospital to be made all better. Dented rollers, drive cog out of alignment and teeth broken and many teeth with stress fractures, missing drive handles and missing pressure screw handles, dirty rusty faded and scratched..
The rollers have been trued. The missing bits fabricated and a new drive cog and a correction to the drive cog's alignment is being made.
 Watch this space...

Table Top Etching Press

This press is the baby of the range, 18 inch and made from a 1903 antique seen here with Janet, it's new owner in her studio. I delivered it myself to Janet in Wellington and caught up with friends and family while I was there and took the long way home.
Not a bad life...

Nelson Etching Press - enquiries: johnmulvay@gmail.com

On a recent trip to Nelson in the South Island of New Zealand to paint a mural I took along a table top etching press for Esther Remnant, a gifted Nelson print maker, to try out while I was there.
It worked. She spent a day printing some of her beautiful lino cuts and they printed fine so she bought it.
You can see Esther's work at:  www.nesterprints.co.nz/

Here is the same press posing on my kitchen table

Etching Press Design - enquiries: johnmulvay@gmail.com

Above is the second press made and sold to Esther in Whangarei. Esther introduced me to dry point on perspex which I had some success with.
The press below shows some design development in comparison to Esther's press. It is not so wide, doesn't gobble up so much precious studio space and also has a removable handle which is standard now.
It went to an American print maker living in Nelson

Table Top Etching Press - enquiries: johnmulvay@gmail.com

This Table Top has rollers 450mm, or 18 inches wide and was sold to an American print maker who has a studio in Indiana. Here it is just finished and posing for a photo on my kitchen table.

Julie sent me these pictures of the press in her Indiana studio and also the other antique printing
machines she has there. Such a nice space, all brand new and squeaky clean.
